Karla Nixon - Torn Paper Landscapes

Karla Nixon works in Durban. She paints landscapes, tears them apart, and reassembles the fragments into places that don't exist — the specific view mattering less than what remains of it. Colour, texture, the way a thing is half-remembered.

Landscape painting has largely left contemporary art. Nixon went back to it to ask why we keep photographing the same mountains and beaches, and what a landscape is once you take the view away.
